Tripoli, 6 November 2021:
Malta is to unfreeze the assets of Libyan individuals according to a post by Malta’s ambassador in Libya Charles Saliba. They will also be allowed to transfer them.
Most of Libyans’ bank accounts are concentrated in two banks; Bank of Valletta and the controversial Sata bank which was suspended for money laundering. Bank of Valleta has about 1,800 accounts belonging to Libyans which have now been audited. The accounts at Sata bank are still being processed.
The Libyan government has reported that the Maltese authorities have been very cooperative in the matter and said the Maltese are not interested in targeting the accounts of Libyans.
The initiative to unfreeze the accounts has come from Prime Minister Abd Alhamid Aldabaiba.
