UNSMIL discusses progress in security sector with Interior Ministry

London, 2 August 2021:

At a meeting between Assistant Secretary-General and UNSMIL Coordinator Raisedon Zenenga and Minister of Interior Khaled Mazen yesterday, the Ministry’s priorities and progress made so far were discussed.

These included elections security, rehabilitation of police services and infrastructure, and formation of the Joint Police Forces to support implementation of the Ceasefire Agreement.

UNSMIL reported that ASG Zenenga commended the role played by the Ministry of Interior leading up to the reopening of the coastal road, and expressed UNSMIL’s continued support for the advancement of the Ministry’s priorities.

Minister Mazen also expressed concern about continuing challenges in dealing with illegal migration, human trafficking and drugs and weapons smuggling, and highlighted constraints faced by the Ministry due to the absence of a national budget.
