London, 7 June 2021:
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said Friday that it is concerned over the arrest of Mr Hassan Al Faghl, chairperson of the subcommittee of the municipality of Qasr Al Akhiyar and employee of the Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections (CCMCE).
It said that the detention of Mr Al Faghl since 19 May, violates Libya’s national laws and international obligations and poses a serious threat to the CCMCE’s institutional independence, obstructing its mandate to administer, organise and supervise local electoral processes in Libya.
It called on the Public Prosecution to conduct a speedy, thorough and transparent investigation into this matter.
