London, 25 June 2021:
UNSMIL reported yesterday that the Advisory Committee of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) commenced yesterday a three-day in-person consultative meeting in Tunis in preparation for the upcoming LPDF plenary discussions which will begin in Switzerland on 28 June.
Building on the proposal adopted by the LPDF Legal Committee and the discussions during the previous virtual LPDF meeting in May, this meeting is convened at the request of some LPDF members, it revealed.
The meeting is to reach a consensus on the outstanding issues and develop a single proposal on a constitutional basis for the 24 December 2021 Parliamentary and Presidential election for the consideration of and decision by the LPDF next week in Switzerland, UNSMIL explained.
The Advisory Committee will also consider options for a decision-making mechanism to be agreed upon and used by the LPDF when deciding on the proposal on the constitutional basis.
Addressing the opening the session yesterday, UNSMIL head Jan Kubis thanked the Advisory Committee members for once again shouldering their responsibility and called on them “To consider the broadest possible compromise, building on the LPDF Legal Committee Proposal, that would address concerns expressed by LPDF members,” during their meeting in May.
Kubis also reiterated the message by the High Representatives of the members of the Berlin Process, including Libya who met Wednesday in Berlin that “Free, fair and inclusive presidential and parliament elections need to take place on 24 December 2021 as set out in the LPDF Roadmap and their results need to be accepted by all”.
