London, 25 June 2021:
Speaking during his visit to Rabat, Morocco, to meet the country’s Speaker of its House of Representatives and its Foreign Minister, Libya’s House of Representatives head, Ageela Saleh:
- Stressed the need to hold elections in its date on 24 December this year under the supervision of the international community and the League of Arab States to ensure its integrity.
- Affirmed his insistence that the Libyan people have the right to choose who governs them through direct elections for the head of state and the House of Representatives on the specified date.
- Called on the Libyan government to support the Libyan High National Elections Commission (HNEC) to carry out their role on the specified date.
- Stressed that the solution to the Libyan crisis is to hold direct elections and not in any other way, stressing that when the president is elected directly by the people, he is a representative of all the Libyan people and derives his legitimacy from the people, and he is the president of all Libyans, not a group of the House of Representatives, the High State Council or any other body. He can then work to achieve reconciliation and restore rights to their owners, thus uniting state institutions under local and international legitimacy.
