London, 14 March 2021:

A fast -food restaurant calling itself Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) opened yesterday in the Hay Al-Andalus area of Tripoli.

The opening of a fast-food outlet is not headline news, but what caught people’s attention is that its opening was ‘‘encouraged’’ and announced by the Hay Al-Andalus Local Council.

The Council said it encouraged the opening of the venture because it trained for and created 20 new jobs for Libyan youth.

The announcement attracted the immediate attention and comments of the general public who were totally sceptical that this was an officially sanctioned KFC franchise. The council responded that the owners seemed to have the correct documentation.
