By Sami Zaptia.

London, 20 January 2021:

The Delegation of the European Union yesterday issues the following statement together with the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States in Libya following the approval by the LPDF of a mechanism for choosing Libya’s next temporary interim government to oversee the 24 December elections:

The EU Heads of Mission welcome today’s approval by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) of the mechanism for selecting a new united executive authority for the entire country. We commend LPDF members, UN Acting Special Representative Stephanie Williams and the UNSMIL team for their relentless efforts and determination to achieve this important result.

Today’s decision is important to lay the ground for what the Libyan people deserve: a unified transitional government working on restoring basic public services and preparing the country for national elections on 24 December 2021. We hope the LPDF will now move swiftly to nominate a new executive based on the agreed mechanism.

We strongly encourage a full and meaningful inclusion and participation of women in the peace process and we fully support women’s active political participation in all parts of the peace process and of the future governance of Libya.

While we welcome today’s achievement, we reiterate the responsibility of Libya’s main stakeholders in moving forward towards the stabilization of the country and working for the general interest of all Libyans. We call upon all Libyan leaders to take up this opportunity in a spirit of compromise to find a sustainable peaceful solution. Libya needs urgent decisions to consolidate the ceasefire, stabilize and relaunch the economy, restore public services and improve the living conditions of the Libyan people.

More than ever, today, we stand with the immense majority of Libyans who reject the status quo, any military or violent option to settle the crisis and terrorism. We share their opposition to all foreign interference, and support their willingness to come together.
