London, 20 October 2020:

As part of its efforts to ensure the full participation of young people and other components at the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, UNSMIL reported today that it had organized the first meeting of the Libyan Youth Path. This brought together 41 participants and participants of young activists and representatives of youth associations from different orientations and regions in Libya, on Sunday, October 18, 2020 through visual communication, UNSMIL reported.

Acting UNSMIL head, Stephanie Williams, in her opening speech to the gathering, praised the acceptance of the invitation to participate in this dialogue, emphasized the role of young people and the fact that they represent the hope and future of Libya, and that the recommendations they agree on will find their way to the agenda of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.

Williams also praised the excellent level of interaction and constructive discussion in the digital dialogue, which involved nearly 1,000 young Libyans at home and abroad, stressing that one of the most striking aspects of the mission’s attention was the loss of confidence among young people in the status quo and those responsible, and that despite the gloomy picture of the current situation, we found that Libyan youth still have hope for peace and a better future for Libya.

The gathered were presented the latest developments in the military track (5+5), the economic track and the human rights track in order to be kept up to date with the latest developments in different tracks.

A consensus recommendation was reached by the gathered stressing the importance of holding elections within an appropriate time frame, calling for the real involvement of young people in dialogues in all their tracks and in the bodies that will result from the upcoming dialogue, stressing the importance of women’s role and status.

The importance of transitional justice, the promotion of the rule of law, the unification of institutions, the restoration of institutions, the restoration of the displaced and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, the preservation of the rights of persons with disabilities, and the compensation of those affected by successive wars and crises, were also included.

The recommendations also dealt with the abolition and dismantling of all armed formations and the reintegration of their affiliates into unified military and security institutions, while ensuring the implementation of the security sector reform program in Libya.

Participants in consensus chose the youngest participants in the Libyan youth path to read out these recommendations in detail at the Libyan Political Dialogue Meeting session through visual communication.
