London, 10 March 2020:
Media outlets aligned to the commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Khalifa Hafter, reported that he had visited Paris to meet French President Emmanuel Macron and that he is in Berlin today for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Various media sources reported and speculated on the content of the Hafter-Macron talks based on leaks, but there has been no official report from the Hafter or Macron side.
The speculation included whether Hafter will respect the truce agreed in Berlin and whether he will pressure his tribal followers to end the blockade on Libya’s oil.
The visit comes as Tripoli continues to come under fire from LNA forces and comes after UNSMIL head Ghassan Salame had announced his resignation on 2 March leaving the Libyan peace process and dialogue up in the air.
