London, 16 February 2018:

Mitiga airport has announced that it will be closing its airspace for 6 hours for the next three months. Starting midnight yesterday, the airport will close every day from midnight until 6 am.

No reason was given for the decision.

It will be recalled that Mitiga was forced to shut down for a couple of hours on Wednesday due to reported gunfire.

It will also be recalled that on January 15 there was a large attack on the airport by a militia aligned to the Tripoli-based internationally recognized government; the Presidency Council/Government of National Accord (PC/GNA).

The attack had led to the Faiez Serraj-led PC/GNA to declare a state of emergency in the area surrounding the airport. The attack had led to extensive damage to aircraft.

The attackers were attempting to free prisoners which the Tripoli government had labelled as extremists.
