Tunis, 6 December 2017:
Presidency Council (PC) head Faiez Serraj has flown into Berlin tonight and will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel tomorrow. It is his first official visit to Germany.
The talks are expected to focus on German support for the PC, the Libyan Political agreement and UNSMIL’s efforts to have it amended as well as German concerns about illegal migration in Libya and the treatment of migrants there.
German officials estimate that 80-90 per cent of all migrants transiting through Libya end up in Germany. Last year it is reported that a million migrants arrived in the country.
Germany is also the largest donor of civil aid to Libya.
Serraj and Merkel last met at the 5th African-EU Summit in Abidjan, Ivory Coast a week ago. Illegal migration through Libya was also one of the key issues discussed.
Serraj flew from Washington following a whirlwind tour of the United States where he held talks with President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and oterh top administration officials as well as an array of military, businesses and diplomatic leaders.
