Tripoli, 13 December 2017:
Some 113 migrants, all from sub-Saharan Africa, were rescued by the Tripoli coastguard today when their boat got into difficulties. According to a coastguard, the rescue took place off “eastern” Tripoli. He would not divulge where but it is thought to be Garabulli, 60 kilometres east of the capital.
The migrants, who include five women, were taken to Busetta naval base before being moved to detention centres elsewhere. They were met at the base by officials from the International Organisation and UNHCR who provided them with individual bags containing water juice and biscuits.
According to one of the migrants the coastguard was called in after a helicopter spotted their boat in difficulties. He said they had been in great danger at the time.
