Tunis, 15 November 2017:
The Italian and German foreign ministers have rounded on the UN for attacking their countries’ help for Libyan Coastguard anti-migrant patrols, saying that they needed support not criticism.
In an angry riposte to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad al Hussein’s criticism yesterday of Libya’s treatment of migrants as “inhuman”, Italy’s Angelino Alfano and his German opposite number Sigmar Gabriel insisted that the Libyan Coastguard was actually saving lives.
“We invite all those who are giving lessons” Associated Press reported the two ministers as protesting after their meeting today in Rome, “to instead give more funds, more logistical support and more intervention in Libya to solve this issue” .
