Benghazi, 15 September 2017:
Farmers and residents in Cyrenaica’s Wahat area which comprised the desert oases towns of Jalu, Awjila and Jakharra, have been warned of the arrival of massive swarms of locusts.
The agricultural authorities have expressed concern for the date crop and even the palm trees which they fear could be devastated as a result and have called on locals to try and take action. This usually involves pesticides.
In their search for food, swarms of locusts can travel up to 150 kilometres a day.
Local police in Al-Wahat report that even electricity columns are being covered by locusts.
