Libyan NGO, Apollonia Organization for Heritage and Culture, announced last Thursday (16 July) that the French Archaeological Mission in Libya announced—from the city of Susa—the discovery of a new ancient theatre overlooking the sea, as well as the rediscovery of a Greek racecourse and sacred complexes within the historic city of Apollonia.
No known parallel in the Cyrenaica region or the Mediterranean basin
In an audio-visual statement, Professor Vincent Michel, Director of the French Archaeological Mission in Libya, emphasized the exceptional scientific significance of this racecourse, noting that it is unique and has no known parallel in the Cyrenaica region or the Mediterranean basin.
The NGO said this announcement marks a significant scientific milestone that may contribute to reinterpreting the history of Apollonia and reinforcing its status as one of the most important archaeological cities in Libya and the Mediterranean world.
