Tunis, 8 September 2017:
The African Union’s mini-summit on Libya in the Congolese capital Brazzaville is due to kick-off tomorrow morning with an array of Libyan and African leaders.
Presidency Council head Faiez Serraj and State Council president Abdulrahman Sewehli were due to fly there today, Friday, while House of Representatives president Ageela Saleh who arrived on Wednesday in Brazzaville has already had a series of meeting with Congo leaders including President Denis Sassou Nguesso who heads the AU’s High Level Committee on Libya.
Among African leaders invited, South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has said that he will take part. Heads of state or of government are also expected from Ethiopia and Mauritania as well as from some of Libya’s neighbouring states. In the case of Sudan, Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria, however, the foreign minister or some other representative is expected.
Also attending are the HoR’s head of its dialogue committee, Abdulsalam Nassiyah, plus numerous delegations in tow.
The big absence is Khalifa Hafter who pointedly declined the invitation to join the talks. Without his presence, the hopes of Nguesso and the AU of following up on the Paris summit and pushing the peace process forward in Libya look set to remain blocked.
