Tunis, 23 August 2017:
The head of the Presidency Council (PC) Faiez Serraj says he is working to end the ban on international matches being played in Libyan stadiums. He made the statement during a visit to Tripoli’s Al-Ahli football club yesterday where he was welcomed by the club chairman along with a number of staff and supporters. Wearing a green shirt, the club’s colours, he toured the premises and watched a training session before holding a meeting with club officials, who welcomed Serraj’s interest in Ahli and its players.
Libya was banned from hosting matches after the revolution but this was then lifted in 2013 first by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and then, reportedly, by football’s international governing authority FIFA. The ban was then reimposed in 2014 because of the security chaos.
Serraj’s visit has triggered criticism on social media that he had time to watch the football team’s training while people Tripoli have had to endure misery with water and power shortages, lack of money in the banks and soaring prices.
