Tunis, 18 July, 2017:

A major smuggling bust has been reported by Tunisian authorities in which 36 vehicles, including a Libyan fuel tanker were seized just over the border into Tunisia.

Security forces said they came under fire when they confronted the large smuggler convoy. Fire was returned but no details have been given of any casualties. The Tunisians detained 11 eleven of their own nationals but other smugglers reportedly fled back over the border.

It is unclear where the encounter took place. The 200-kilometre berm and ditch which now runs along part of the border with Libya has been sited around two kilometres into Tunisian territory. A foreign-trained border force patrols regularly and last year it was reported that German and American remote monitoring equipment was being installed.
