Benghazi, 8 July 2017:
At least 48 Egyptians have perished in high temperatures after it appears they tried to bypass a security checkpoint on the B11 Tobruk-Ajdabiya road.
The Libyan Red Crescent said yesterday that the bodies had been found in the desert to the south of the unnamed checkpoint. The organisation did not say how the people had died nor how they had been travelling. It does not appear that there were any survivors in the group.
The Red Crescent did however confirm that the dead were all Egyptian migrants on their way to seek work in Libya. It said yesterday that it had so far recovered 19 of the bodies.
Meanwhile, a police patrol yesterday stopped a truck 24 km outside of Ajdabiya. They reported that the vehicle was carrying dumper truck and a tractor which were being smuggled to Egypt. The driver, who was allegedly in possession of false export documents issued in Benghazi, was arrested and the truck and its load seized.
