Tripoli, 2 May 2017:
The head of the Presidency Council, Faiez Serraj, arrived in Abu Dhabi last night in a visit widely seen as engineered to ensure a meeting with Khalifa Hafter, who also arrived in the emirate at much the same time.
Unlike Hafter’s visit, announced by the Libya National Army’s general command media office, there has been no official announcement so far of Serraj’s, either by the Emiratis or the PC’s media office. However, local Abu Dhabi reporters have confirmed it.
Hafter was invited by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy commander of the UAE armed forces, who is coordinating UAE attempts at mediation in Libya.
The UAE supports the Libyan Political Agreement but has also given its backing to Hafter including, reportedly, military support and equipment, and funding.
Serraj was last in Abu Dhabi for talks with Sheikh Mohammed in September.
