Benghazi, 26 May 2017:
Controversial Saiqa Special Forces military commander Mahmoud Warfali has been promoted from captain to major, it has been disclosed.
Following publication of video footage showing him purportedly executing prisoners, with war crimes accusations then being levelled against him, he made a show of resigning from Saiqa the week before last. It was suggested at the time that he was under pressure from Saiqa’s top commander Colonel Wanis Boukhamada to do so. However, Boukhamada refused to accept the resignation. It was said at the time that he valued Warfali and wanted to keep him close to his side.
Reports that he has now been made commander of Saiqa’s forces in Sabri as part of his promotion have not been confirmed.
Meanwhile, Saiqa has also appointed a new head of its investigations unit. Marai Mohamed Ali Al-Hwati takes over from Fadl Al-Hassi who was killed earlier this week in a mine explosion. Al-Hwati’s brother, likewise a member of Saiqa, was also killed fighting the militants.
