Benghazi, 26 May 2017:
Baggage handlers at Labraq airport went on strike today over unpaid salaries bringing the airport to a sudden close. Passengers in Tunis and Alexandria’s Burj Al-Arab airports were left stranded and in the latter ended up sleeping in the airport, hoping for a flight tomorrow.
At the time of writing, it is not known if the strike is a one-day affair or is open-ended.
Last December, when baggage handlers at Labraq joined a national strike over unpaid salaries, the aiport remained closed for three days and only reopened when the Beida-based interim government of Abdullah Al-Thini agreed to release LD 13 million to pay for outstanding salaries.
Unlike the situation three days ago when, with Labraq closed by a sandstorm, a flight was diverted to Benghazi’s Benina airport, no such diversion happened today.
