Benghazi, 19 April 2017:
For the first time in Benghazi, the local municipal guard has set up an all-female unit. Based in Majouri district, it will monitor shops and services throughout the city, for the moment primarily beauty salons and women’s hairdressers.
The main role of the municipal guard, sometimes also known as the municipal police, is to ensure shops and services are operating correctly. This includes ensuring that goods used or sold are not out of date and that prices are competitive. It functions under the control of the city council.
Headed by Sergeant Salima Tawerghi, the new five-woman unit started working at the beginning of the week.
