Tunis, 5 April 2017:
The head of the passport office in Khoms was shot dead last night.
It is unclear who was behind the killing of Marwan Abshish, which occured outside his father’s marble factory in nearby Suq Al-Khamis, or the motive for it although it is not thought that it was politically motivated. There are reports that earlier the victim had been involved in an altercation with two other people in Khoms.
Over the past year several passport authority staff have been killed in disputes over the issuing of passports.
Five months ago, the head of Soloug passport department was shot dead following an argument with a passport applicant. Earlier, in July last year, two passport officials in Murzuk were similarly murdered.
Khoms has been relatively spared from the violence besetting Libya, although four people, including three children, were brutally murdered in the town last November.
