Tunis, 16 March 2017:
Despite finally loosing his court battle to stay as Central Bank governor, Saddek Elkaber is still in his Tripoli office where he today welcomed the German ambassador Christian Buck.
Elkaber was sacked in 2014 by the House of Representatives but contested the decision on the grounds that he was only two years into his five-year statutory term and could not normally be fired. He took his case to the courts.
The Court of Appeals in Tripoli has since said it did not have the power to overturn a decision by the parliament.
Elkaber and and Faiez Serraj have been severely at odds. Elkaber has accused the PC of being economically incompetent while Serraj has claimed that Elkaber had failed to restore liquidity to retail banks and was stymying his administration’s efforts to turn around the economy.
The PC is currently funded through an agreement with the CBL known as Temporary Financial Arrangements.
