10 February 2017:
Zintan mayor Mustafa Al-Barouni has been in Brussels for talks with EU officials about possible help to develop the town.
The mayors of Sirte and Sebha were also invited by the EU’s Committee of the Regions (CoR) but were unable to attend. CoR has over the past couple of years developed a programme to enable partnerships between European cities and regions and Libyan cities to help the latter develop. Barouni, along with Central Tripoli mayor Abdekrauf Beitelmal, also acts as the representatives of the Libya mayors in this regard.
Two areas of assistance for Zintan are support in the fields of primary health care and waste management. The CoR is also looking to mentor expansion of the mountain town, logistics development, and investment in the local oil and gas services sector.
While in Belgium Barouni also visited the town of Mechelen.
With Beitelmal, he is also a Libyan observer in the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly, which brings together local and regional authorities from around the Mediterranean.
Zintan also, for the past four months, has been “twinned” with Verona in Italy. An friendship agreement was signed last October.
