Tripoli, 31 January 2017:
Presidency Council chairman Faiez Serraj has paid a surprise visit to the Tripoli children’s hospital which has blamed lack of government funding for bringing it close to closure.
Serraj, who had only just returned from from the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, toured the Al-Jalaa Children’s hospital and promised managers that money would be given provided as soon as possible.
The hospital, which has a struggling neo-natal clinic and also deals with women’s diseases, had this week turned in desperation to the public, asking people to donate money to fund it. One anonymous benefactor recently paid for the delivery of fuel which enabled the hospital to keep its generators running.
Serraj praised the staff for continuing to operate the hospital despite difficult conditions. No details were given of how much money would be provided from the PC’s funds. Managers were also tight-lipped about their talks with Serraj, though the body language in photographs of the meeting suggest that the PC chairman was made aware of some strong feelings.
