Tunis, 18 January 2017:
Presidency Council (PC) head Faiez Serraj has decided not go to the World Economic Forum taking place this week in Davos and is staying in Tripoli to deal with the energy crisis afflicting Libya.
Serraj will continue to hold a series of meetings with PC members and organisations, including the General Electric Company of Libya (GECOL), in an effort to resolve the ongoing blackouts that have lasted as long as 10 days in some regions. The PC is to set up a crisis group to monitor the implementation of the agreements they come to.
Meanwhile, though, he has been invited to Brussels, although no date has been specified. The invitation came from EU’s foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini during a phone call she made to him. They also discussed the political and security situation in Libya, the EU’s continued support for the Government of National Accord (GNA) and migration and border controls in Libya.
Serraj’s recent travels – he was in Mali for the two-day France-Africa summit four days ago, and prior to that in Cairo – have drawn criticism in Libya. Questions have been asked why he needed to go to the summit, particularly given the situation at home.
