Tunis, 7 January 2017:
UNSMIL chief Martin Kobler has hailed as important his meeting today with Algeria’s Minister for Maghreb, Arab and African Affairs Abdelkader Messahel.
Coming on the heels of his talks in Tunis yesterday with House of Representatives president Ageela Saleh, Kobler is pressing on with his drive to find some common ground on which the Libyan Political Agreement can be adjusted as necessary and agreed.
Saleh has consistently blocked a vote by parliament on amendments to the 2011 Constitutional Declaration which would accommodate the LPA . The parliament has equally thrown back two Government of National Accord cabinets proposed by Faiez Serraj and the Presidency Council and is awaiting a third list, which the PC was saying in early December would be ready within days.
Kobler insisted that his meeting with Saleh was constructive and added that he hoped it would advance the political process. After his Algiers talks today with Messahel he said that 2017 should be the year of decisions and peace in Libya.
