Benghazi, 15 November 2016:
Cyrenaica’s military governor has apologised for the demolition of two Marj homes mistakenly thought to have been built without permission.
Major-General Abdul Razzak Al-Nazhuri, who is also army chief of staff, went on local radio to regret the demolitions and say that he himself would pay for the rehousing of the two affected families.
The destruction of the two properties triggered angry demonstrations by locals. The normally buttoned-down Marj, where armed forces commander-in-chief Khalifa Hafter has his headquarters, saw crowds burning tyres and protesting that the houses should not have been included in a campaign to pull down unauthorised buildings.
