Two Italians and a Canadian working in the far south-western town of Ghat were kidnapped this morning near the town’s airport. Initially it was thought that just one Italian had been seized but the Italian foreign ministry has confirmed that two were taken, naming them as 56-year-old Bruno Cacace and Danilo Calonego, 66.
They and the Canadian, who has been named simply as “Frank” but no surname given, are said to be working for Con.I.Cos, the Italian company which has the contract to upgrade Ghat airport.
Masked men using more than one four-wheel-drive vehicle forced the three men’s car to stop while they were on their way to work at around 7am and seized them after handcuffing their driver, a local man.
According to the security officials, preliminary investigations indicate that they were taken to Obari, some 370 kilometres away.
