Benghazi, 9 August 2016:
Gunmen from the Benghazi Defence Brigades (Saraya Bengahzi/BDB) attacked a unit from the Libyan National Army this morning at the Naga oilfield, southeast of Zillah. After some six hours of clashes, the BDB force, reportedly led by Benghazi militant Ziyad Belam, was forced to withdraw.
It is said to have lost six members in the attack while the LNA which was guarding the field, lost two.
In June Belam’s men were part of the BDB force that tried, and likewise failed, to take over Ajdabiya.
Operated by Harouge Oil, a joint venture between the NOC and Petro-Canada, the Naga field has not been active for some while. It was one of the fields taken over by the LNA in May.
The oilfield hit the headlines earlier this year when it was one of several in the Sirte basin attacked by ISIS.
