Tunis, 17 August 2016:
British ambassador Peter Millett has been in Tobruk today for talks with members of the House of Representatives (HoR) in a effort to encourage them to approve the Government of National Accord. He also met with local municipal and tribal leaders.
In a tweet, Millett said that the discussions had been “constructive” although officials say that he failed to convince them to support the GNA led by Faiez Serraj.
The members he met included Tarek Geroushi, a firm supporter of General Khalifa Hafter and son of air force chief Saqr Geroushi. According to Geroushi, the HoR members told the ambassador that the GNA was a failure and that UN special envoy Martin Kobler had to be replaced.
Millet did not meet HoR president Ageela Saleh.
It was the first visit to the HoR and to Tobruk by any foreign ambassador. The only foreign official to visit has been Kobler.
The visit follows a TV interview last week in which Millett expressed his desire to meet the HoR.
