Benghazi, 7 July 2016:
The car-bombing yesterday evening in Gwarsha not only killed 210 Brigade commander Idris Abdulmula Al-Barasi, as reported in the Libya Herald but ten other soldiers, including of his officers.
The suicide bomber drove into the group near the Chinese buildings on the edge of Ganfouda. Several other troops were injured in the blast. It is still unclear how the vehicle managed to pass through army lines. There is one report that the attack happened while the soldiers were praying.
Fierce fighting is still going around Teachers’ Beach where the 309 Brigade lost three men when militants launched a surprise attack yesterday morning. Three soldiers died in that assault and there are unconfirmed reports that further three have been killed today.
The resistance being offered by the terrorists of IS and Ansar Al-Sharia and their Benghazi Revolutionaries’ Shoura Council allies may demonstrate the desperation of the trapped militants. But it disproves claims last week by one army source that they were a spent force.
The military says it has vessels patrolling offshore to interdict fresh ammunition and supplies to Ganfouda and stop any evacuation. A similar blockade announced off the beach of the besieged terrorist positions in downtown Sabri, near the port, does not seem to have had any impact of the besieged fighters’s ability to resist.
