Tripoli, 17 July 2016:
Faiez Serraj has personally fired the entire board of state power company GECOL appointing a new president and chief executive.
The head of the Presidency Council and prime minister-designate said that the GECOL management had failed to solve the problems of power cuts and electricity distribution.
He named Abdul Majid Hamza as the new GECOL president and Ali Mohammed Sassi as the chief executive along with a seven-member board. All the positions were described as “caretaker”
On Friday night the PC member Mohamed Zayed made a deal with Tripoli mayors to spread power cuts evenly over the metropolitan area. He also promised to expedite the hiring of emergency power generation sets.
Ironically, only yesterday, GECOL announced that the first unit at the Sirte Gulf power station had come back on stream to provide a much-needed extra 350 MW of power.
