Tripoli 15 July 2016:

Fathi Majbri, the only eastern member of the Presidency Council who is not currently boycotting its proceeding, has been in Rome today for talks with the Italian government.

Majbri met Vincenzo Amendola, the under-secretary of state at the Italian foreign office. The visit came on the eve of the reconvened Libya Dialogue in Tunis where the search will be on for a way to make the Libyan Political Agreement acceptable to the House of Representatives in Tobruk.

Afterwards officials said the two men had reviewed developments with the LPA. They also looked at ways that Italy could strengthen its support for the PC and the Government of National Accord. It was not simply the GNA’s quest for wider political acceptance that needed backing but also the rising economic crisis and continuing security problems.

Twelve days ago Amendola and Starace came to Tripoli  with a team of officials and met the GNA’s foreign minister-designate Mohamed Siala.

Majbri and his team also had discussions with Italian defence minister Roberta Pinotti.  These centres on mine detection, border patrols, confronting terror  and the treatment of conflict casualties. Some of the most seriously wounded in the Bunyan Marsous campaign against IS in Sirte have been flown to Italy for treatment.
