Tripoli, 7 July 2016:
Mistrata municipal council today released soldiers and functionaries of the former regime most of them imprisoned since 2011. The exact number involved was unclear but a city official said that seven came from Tawergha. Also set free was a member of Qaddafi’s Qadhadhfa tribe from Sirte.
It appears however that all the men had completed their sentences. There seems to have been no remission of longer jail terms in a traditional Eid gesture.
Nevertheless, the Misratans’ release of the Tawerghans may be taken as a further step towards the UNSMIL-sponsored rapprochement between the two communities. In May nine Tawerghans detained at Misrata’s Air Force academy were among 20 supporters of the old regime who were let go.
