Tripoli, 4 July 2016:
The controversial grand mufti, Sadek Al-Ghariani, has said he firmly supports national reconciliation in Libya. However, it appears that there are limits to whom he is prepared to be reconciled with.
Speaking on his own Tanasah TV, he excluded anyone who does not agree that the Sharia should be the law in Libya and anyone he deems an oppressor.
That included, he said, anyone fighting the revolutionaries in Benghazi – which means the Libyan National Army led by General Khalifa Hafter, and anyone who supports it.
The main battle, he also declared again, was in Benghazi.
The Benghazi Defence Units, which last month tried but failed to take over Ajdabiya, are seen very much as his militia; it claims it derives its authority and legitimacy from him.
