Tripoli, 29 June 2016:

The Rada (Special Deterrence Force) has freed a kidnapped Niger man and arrested one of his abductors in a raid in Tripoli.

Haj Haroun was grabbed at the weekend in a typical crime that exploits often illegal immigrants scratching a living in the capital.  Rada sources say the gang demanded LD 90,000 for their victim’s release. However, negotiations with Haroun’s friends produced an agreement to release him in return for a downpayment of LD 7,000 but the kidnappers would keep his passport until the rest of the money had been paid.

In circumstances that are unclear, Rada forces swooped on the gang and arrested one member named as Ahmed Fitouri.  The money was recovered and returned to Fitouri and his friends.

This is the latest success that Rada has had busting kidnap gangs. Earlier this month the special deterrence force, which is run by Abdulraouf Kara, earlier this month freed a man held for 45 days, for whom a ransom of €2 million had been demanded.
