Tripoli, 30 April 2016:
Prime minister-designate Faiez Serraj’s walkabout in Tripoli’s Old Town was as notable for the low key . . .[restrict]security around him as it was for the surprise and evident delight of people with whom he shook hands and hugged.
Serraj’s walk after Friday prayers was unannounced and drew no huge crowds. He moved through part of the Medina and then strode across Martyrs’ Square, stopping to pose for photographs, including with a group of children. A toddler whose sister’s hand had just been kissed by Serraj was clearly bemused by the whole business and was not keen to be hugged by the politician.
Throughout Serraj’s walk, during which he looked relaxed, casually dressed and in sunglasses, it was clear that there were security men around him in civilian clothes. However, there were no gun-totting individuals in uniform though it is possible some militiamen may have been posted on vantage points.
He later had a meeting with a Tawerghan delegation that came to his headquarters at the Bu Sitta naval base. [/restrict]
