Tripoli, 13 April 2016:
Angry Ajdabiya customers stormed the local branch of the National Commercial Bank today when tellers . . .[restrict]said they had run out banknotes. The manager shut the doors but the crowd attacked the building, smashing windows and the main door.
Police were called, said the Beida-based news agency LANA, and the ringleaders of the riot were arrested. The protestors’ anger did not however produce any cash.
Banks all over Libya have been experiencing banknote shortages. Individual withdrawals have been limited to LD200.
Nevertheless, throughout the rivalry between the government and its rival in Tripoli, the Central Bank in the capital has continued to supply cash to the CBL in the east.
Part of the problem everywhere seems to have lain with the distribution of cash to their branches by the banks themselves.
