Zuwara, 28 September 2015:
A new publication . . .[restrict]from the Ministry of Education setting out this year’s school curriculum has incensed members of the country’s Amazigh community.
The problem is not so much that it is written in Arabic as its statement that the curriculum is for “the Libya Arab student”. It also refers to Libyan schoolchildren as Arabs.
The publication has resulted in numerous angry complaints from members of the Amazigh community to the newly-elected Amazigh Supreme Council demanding it take up the matter with the education ministry. It says it will do so.
The complainants point out that such references to the “Libyan Arab student” did not occur in previous years’ curriculum publications and indicates a new chauvinism at the ministry. [/restrict]
