Benghazi, 16 October 2015:

There was intensive rocket fire in Benghazi last night as Libyan army and linked forces continued . . .[restrict]to try and dislodge militants. In one incident, two people, a man and a woman, were killed and another four injured when a randomly fired missile hit an apartment block in the city’s Kish district.

There are also unconfirmed reports that two Libyan National Army (LNA) soldiers were killed and five others injured in separate fighting with militants elsewhere in the city.

It is not known who fired the Kish rocket. The Benghazi Revolutionaries Shoura Council, the Islamist umbrella organisation which includes Ansar Al-Sharia, was reported to have threatened to launch missiles at nearby Kish Square today if anyone  dared turn up to a planned protest there today and there have been claims that it was to blame. One of its associated groups, Free Libya Martyrs Brigade, is certainly believed to be have been responsible for ten inaccurately fired missiles which exploded next to Benina airport on Wednesday killing a few sheep. At the beginning of the week, its leader, Wissam Ben Hamid, announced he would continue firing at the airport while the LNA continued to use it.

For its part, the LNA has said that it will continue its operations against the militants regardless of whether the UN-brokered Libya Dialogue deal is approved by the House of Representatives and the General National Congress or not. [/restrict]
