Tripoli, 12 October 2015:
Benghazi Islamist militia leader Wisam Ben Hamid has said that his forces will continue shelling . . .[restrict]Benina airbase so long as the Libyan air force uses it, as he said, to bomb and destroy the city.
Benina is also used as the civil airport. Shortly after the statement, shells hit an airport administration building, according to the airport manager. In the past month, the airport has been shelled at least a couple of times.
Ben Hamid was commander of one of the main forces in the city, Libya Shield No. 1 force. He appears to have now transformed himself into the commander of the Free Libya Martyrs Brigade. His statement was put out in its name.
He was recently reported seen at the prime ministerial office in Tripoli, currently held by Khalifa Ghwell. He is also said to have been to Misrata, where is family is said to be currently based. The family home in Benghazi’s Kuwafiyah suburb was torched two years ago by members of the Barghathi tribe who accused him of responsibility for the assassination of Colonel Ahmed Mustafa Al-Barghathi, the head of the military police. On TV he denied involvement in the killing, but threatened revenge on those who had burned his house down.
Meanwhile, the Libyan air force has said that military operations against the militants will continue in Benghazi regardless of the Libya Dialogue agreement.
