Some 30 people have been killed and at least a dozen injured today in fierce fighting . . .[restrict]between armed bands in Kufra.
According to the town council’s spokesman, Mohammad Khalil, armed men in 20 vehicles tried to storm the town in an assault from the north. Khalil said that local people tried to drive them back, destroying some of attackers’ trucks. However a local petrol station was damaged in the deadly exchanges.
It is being claimed that the attackers were Tebu who had come from Chad and were drive off by Zwai tribesmen in the town.
Since mid-summer Kufra has seen a rising tide of violence. The airport has been closed and damaged and traffic on surrounding highways is frequently held up by roadblocks [/restrict]
