Tripoli, 29 August 2015:
Three suspected people-smugglers have been arrested in Zuwara and paraded before the cameras holding up pictures . . .[restrict]of drowned children.
It is understood that the men were reported to Zuwara’s Rapid Intervention Force, who raided a house on Thursday where the trio had allegedly collected a group of migrants.
There is increasing local anger at the rising death toll among migrants. This prompted a demonstration in the centre of the town yesterday protesting at the thriving people-smuggling trade in the area.
A local resident told the Libya Herald this morning: “We are all responsible for the blood of the victims. Everybody here in Zuwara shares in this. People are renting rooms to the migrants, shop owners are selling stuff to them and taxi drivers are taking them to the places of the dealdy boats. Everybody knows they are going to get on the boats”. [/restrict]
