Tripoli, 9 August 2015:
A car driven by a suicide bomber is reportedly have exploded in Derna this evening . . .[restrict]killing eight guards attached to the Shora Council of Mujahideen in Derna (SCMD) and wounded 14 others.
The vehicle is said to have blown up at a checkpoint in Derna’s Shahel Shargia (“east coast”) district manned by a youth contingent attached to the SCMD, according to mujahideen sources in Derna. One of the dead was the commander.
There has been no independent corroboration of the attack so far.
It follows claims of advances by the mujahideen during the day against Islamic State (IS) forces based in the Fataiah farmland area behind the town.
Although reports of collaboration between the mujahideen and the Libyan National Army (LNA) have been vigorously denied by both sides, LNA aircraft are said to have targeted IS positions in Fataiah both yesterday and today.
Yesterday Sahel Shargia came under rocket fire from IS in Fataiah. [/restrict]
