Tunis, 3 July 2015:
Libya’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Hassan Saghaier, told Maltese Foreign Minister George Vella that Libya was . . .[restrict]surprised at the unilateral steps taken by the EU without consulting the Libyan government, in its attempt to stem the tide of illegal migration through Libya.
He added that the use of military action as part of EU plans to combat illegal migration across the Mediterranean will not solve the problem and might hamper the function and stability of an upcoming unity government.
The Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister made the statement Thursday during a meeting with the Maltese Foreign Minister in Valletta during an official visit to the Islands led by Prime Minister Abdullah Thinni and which included a large ministerial delegation.
Saghaier confirmed the Libyan government’s view on the importance of dialogue and highlighted the agreement to form a Government of National Unity that would unite the efforts to address the growing phenomenon of extremism and terrorism, and that would facilitate the return to normal life for Libyan citizens.
