Benghazi, 6 July 2015:
In the high heat of summer, the stench of rotting rubbish again pervades the air in . . .[restrict]Benghazi, adding to the city’s woes. Garbage is once more piling up in the streets because rubbish collectors and street cleaners are yet again refusing to work because, for the umpteenth time, they have not been paid.
In March, they ended a week-long strike over six-months of unpaid salaries after the Ministry of Local Government in Beida promised to provide LD 9 million for the back pay.
Ever since the revolution, there have been regular strikes by the collectors over non-payment of salaries. In the past year and a half, it has also been too dangerous for them to operate in many areas. But now, once more it is a money problem.
As in so many other areas of public service across oil-rich Libya failing because of lack of funds, Benghazi Municipal Council says that it is trying to address the issue but can do little until it is provided with the cash. [/restrict]
