Benghazi, 13 June 2015:
In heavy clashes today in Gwarsha, the Libyan National Army’s Brigade 309 reports that 13 of . . .[restrict]its troops were injured and one killed in fighting with forces of the Islamic State (IS). As spokesman added that the brigade had captured nine IS vehicles. No figures were given as to IS casualties.
On Monday, however, a brigade spokesman claimed that it had killed 30 “terrorists” near at Mreisa, the small port 25 kilometres southwest of central Benghazi being used by the jihadists for supplies and to ship out their wounded.
The port, by the Nakheel tourist village, is still under IS control. But a 309 Brigade spokesman said that an assault against it was imminent.
“We are ready to attack and are now awaiting orders”.
The jihadists in Benghazi are no longer seen or referred to as Ansar Al-Sharia. With the death of its leader Mohamed Al-Zahawim which was confirmed in January, its fighters have either left or switched allegiance to IS. Almost all the statements are now put out by IS. [/restrict]
